Capital New York to Relaunch

Will debut N.Y. spin on Politico Playbook

News site Capital New York, which was purchased by Politico in September, is gearing up for a full relaunch on Dec. 3. In addition to a redesigned website, Capital will have a bigger editorial staff (a slew of new hires have been made from outlets like the New York Observer, Daily Beast and New York Post) and broader coverage.

Although Capital will “maintain a robust free site,” according to the company, the majority of Capital’s content will go behind a paywall accessible only to “Pro” subscribers, who will also receive exclusive newsletters and be invited to subscriber-only event. The site will offer three premium plans: City Hall Pro, Albany Pro and Media Pro. All three will be free until early 2014.

Capital is also planning to launch Capital Playbook, its own, New York-centric version of the popular Politico Playbook newsletter, which will be distributed for free on weekday mornings. Mike Allen, the Politico chief White House correspondent who writes Politico Playbook, will also work on Capital’s newsletter.

In a statement, Capital New York and Politico CEO Jim VandeHei said of the new direction, “New York has a hunger for better coverage…We have hired some of the best journalists in the industry to disrupt the competition and deliver essential coverage to the most powerful people in the state.”
