Bruce Campbell Joins Twitter, Confirms Evil Dead Remake, Creates Frenzy

Both “Bruce Campbell” and “Evil Dead” were trending on Twitter yesterday, and it’s all thanks to the infamous Evil Dead star taking to Twitter to answer a fan’s question.

Bruce Campbell, who is known for the campy horror flicks in the Evil Dead series, only started tweeting about a week ago, but he’s already created a Twitter storm.

Campbell, who tweets under the pseudonym @GroovyBruce, started tweeting on July 7th (well, he has one Tweet from April 14th). He tweeted pretty innocuous stuff at first, like info about is appearance at the San Diego Comic Con and a couple of Songify songs he sang. But then, this happened:

Within minutes of this tweet, “Bruce Campbell” and “Evil Dead” were trending on Twitter.

The fan that Campbell replied to tweeted the following earlier that day: “I won’t believe in a new Evil Dead film until I see it. Or at least not until @GroovyBruce tells me to believe in it.”

Now, if you’re not in the underground, cult sci-fi movie channels, you might not get what all the fuss is about. But just imagine that Keanu Reeves tweeted that the Matrix remake was in the works, and you’ll get the idea.

The frenzy that followed this tweet was fierce, with blogs picking up the story that Evil Dead 4 would be made soon. However, Campbell had to clarify himself that he was talking about the original Evil Dead being remade, not an addition to the series. Plus, he has yet to confirm whether he’ll actually be in the remake, or whether he’s just aware of it and promoting it.

Still, an interesting little story of how Twitter is used by celebrities to circumvent the regular channels like press releases and interviews. Plus, I’m pretty excited to see this remake (nerd fact: it is rumored to be directed by the independent director who made the short film Panic Attack).
