Blogger and Picasa to be Rebranded

There was a hot story yesterday on Blogger and Picasa, and it looks like they might be getting new names. Mashable was the first to break the story, and here was its scoop:

Say goodbye to the Picasa and Blogger names: Google intends to retire several non-Google name brands and rename them as Google products, Mashable has learned. … Google intends to rename Picasa “Google Photos” and Blogger will become “Google Blogs.”

It turns out that this is not completely accurate. Alex Chitu wrote a post on one of the offical Google blogs last night and confirmed some of the details of the story, but he also shot down some of the details.

Mashable thought that Blogger would be renamed, but as you can see there’s a problem with the supposed new name: Google Blogs is already in use.  Google has its own blogs, and those are referred to as the “Google Blogs”. Thw name also is used by Google to refer to one of its specialized search engines.

But Google is looking at changing Blogger. The service could pick up some interface elements from Google+, and Google is also looking at how Blogger’s commenting system and user profiles could be revamped and integrated with Google+.
