Ben’s Big Pole

As part of CBS-2/KCAL-9’sSummer of Love” Fireworks Festival tomorrow, artist Benjamin Lucas will be displaying his traveling “Totem Pole of Hope.”

This is no ordinary pole. It’s a 15-foot, 3,000-pound mahogany totem pole erected by the artist to honor rock legends Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and John Lennon. Oh, and it’s going to travel the country. In each city the totem pole stops, Lucas will be asking mayors to demand that the president end the war. (We think they mean the Iraq War, but we’re not sure just how stuck in the 60s the organizers are.)

Lucas became a local celebrity in his Laurel Canyon community when he started displaying the totem pole during his 1999 run for City Council.

The fireworks festivities will take place at the CBS Studio City Center tomorrow, July 4th, at 5:30 p.m. Details: 818-655-5916.
