Because Sometimes Vanity Does Take $120 million, Four Years, and Frank Gehry…


BusinessWeek, yesterday, had a good story on the new Frank Gehry building in development, the new pseudo-museum-slash-expensive-ego-stroke in Paris for the Louis Vuitton company. Starting soon, the building plans to open in 2009 or 2010 and will be all kinds of Gehry crazy. Vuitton has also snagged Paris’ Museum of Modern Art’s Suzanne Page to become the building’s Artistic Director. Maybe you should get one for the office too (we’re talking to you, office manager at the Omaha branch of Merrill-Lynch). Here’s some (try not to giggle too much when you read that first absurdly pretentious quote):

The foundation will “open a dialogue with wider audiences,” says company chairman Bernard Arnault, who initiated the project. LVMH already has an art gallery on the top floor of its new store on the Champs Elysees, and has hosted exhibitions at Paris’s Pompidou Center, Palais de Tokyo, and Grand Palais. The building is scheduled to open in late 2009 or early 2010. Sixty-five thousand square feet of exhibition space will contain modern and contemporary art, as well as original commissions produced specifically for the space. These items will likely be themed around LVMH products and symbols. The center will also contain spaces for research, documentation, and teaching.

“Research, documentation, and teaching” about Louis Vuitton products?! Lord it must be nice to have that kind of money. When we get rich, we’re going to start our own museum so we can hire PhD candidates to track down what kinds of socks we were wearing when we wrote this very post.
