Baltimore City Paper Staff Unionize

Ownership voluntarily recognizes the union

It has largely been digital publications who have been part of a new wave of unionization efforts, but the latest to unionize is a good old-fashioned alt-weekly, The Baltimore City Paper, a publication with a 50,000 print circulation and an average of 300,000 monthly unique visitors. All seven of the 10-member editorial staff who were eligible to unionize have, voting to be represented by the Washington-Baltimore News Guild.

Baltimore City Paper owner Baltimore Sun Media Group, which owns the Baltimore Sun as well as a network of regional magazines, voluntarily recognized the union. The Baltimore Sun Media Group purchased the alt-weekly in 2014. The Sun staff also belong to the guild, some of whose other members include Bloomberg BNA, The Washington Post, Foreign Policy and recent addition The American Prospect.

Baltimore Sun Media Group is itself part of Tronc.
