AT&T, T-Mobile & Verizon 3G Speed Test Near Union Square in San Francisco

Frank McPherson asked me what T-Mobile 3G was like in San Francisco. I didn’t wander around much during my brief stay. However, here’s what I saw in terms of 3G speed from my 16th floor room about 2 blocks from Union Square where many major hotels are located.

AT&T Wireless (iPhone 4): 400Kbps
T-Mobile (Nexus One): 200Kbps
Verizon Wireless (Motorola Droid): 380Kbps

I used DSLReports.com’s web-based mobile speed test with all of the phones and services listed above.

Despite the poor press AT&T Wireless receives for its bay area reception, I only ran into a 3G problem once. On the other hand, both T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless dropped from 3G to EDGE/1xRTT several times since I arrived late Wednesday afternoon. I used the Nexus One’s WiFi tethering feature when the hotel’s WiFi became overtaxed (my guess, not confirmed) for hours yesterday. However, as you might imagine, I soon gave up doing much serious work on my iPad (like blog writing research) because of the slow speed.

I’m sitting in a Starbucks on O’Farrell St. using its free WiFi (thanks, Starbucks!) to submit this blog entry.
