Atlantic Media’s Quartz Fills Out Team

Global business site promises unconventional take on commentary

Atlantic Media Co.’s forthcoming business site, Quartz, is taking shape with some new editorial hires to lead areas—including what editor in chief Kevin Delaney said would be an innovative approach to commentary.

Heading it up will be S. Mitra Kalita, who was hired as commentary editor from The Wall Street Journal, where she was a senior writer. Earlier in her career, she worked for The Washington Post, Newsday and The Associated Press.

Atlantic Media has positioned the quirkily named Quartz as unconventional in everything from its mobile-driven format to its sponsored-content approach to advertising to its flexible editorial presentation.

When it comes to commentary, Delaney, who also was at the Journal before he left to start Quartz, said he saw a chance to “establish a unique position in commentary online” by commissioning pieces from outside traditional sources and publishing commentary of different lengths and in data and visual form. As for whether Quartz would take a political point of view, he said pieces would come from across the political spectrum.

“We're casting the net much more widely than most traditional media players when it comes to the locations and backgrounds of our writers,” he emailed.

As for the rest of the masthead, which will number 25 people all told, Quartz has also hired Steve LeVine as Washington correspondent, from Foreign Policy magazine; Euny Hong as lifestyle editor, from France 24, the country’s 24-hour news network; and Tim Fernholz, as reporter, from Good. The site is slated to launch later this year.
