ASME Names Glamour ‘Magazine of the Year,’ Loses All Credibility

195glamour.jpgAt the American Society of Magazine Editors’ National Magazine Awards on Thursday, Glamour magazine was awarded the top honor as magazine of the year. The women’s magazine baffingly beat out other publications like National Geographic, The New Yorker and Vanity Fair.

This fishie happens to have a subscription to Glamour and no, we’re not proud. It’s the worst kind of women’s magazine, the sort that promotes vapid features about weight-loss and hairstyles as having something to do with female empowerment. Sure, the glossy beauty and fashion spreads make for nice eye-candy, but let’s not kid ourselves – the writing is shite. It’s Barbie feminism – the “We girls can do anything” slogan coupled with the assumption that all we really want to do is lose weight, apply eyeshadow, and talk about boys.

According to the ASME website, the ‘Magazine of the Year’ award “honors publications that successfully use both print and digital media in fulfilling the editorial mission of the magazine.” If the editorial mission of Glamour is to treat women like mentally-challenged narcissists, then hooray – they earned their prize.
