Apple's New iPad Press Conference: Live Blog

Apple is holding a press conference today at 10am PT/1pm ET, where they are expected to release the iPad 3. We'll be following the event as it unfolds from various live blogs around the web to reveal the news as it breaks. Check back to find out the latest details. 9:54 Apple has changed its homepage to boast its recent success of hitting 25 billion downloads from the app store, a great way to segway into releasing a new iPad. 9:58 gdgt is reporting that Apple's Tim Stevens is now on stage and he is talking about the "post-PC revolution." 10:01 These devices are the iPod, iPhone, iPad. Engadget quotes Stevens: "Any company would be thrilled to have just one of these devices. At Apple, we're fortunate to have all three, and the momentum has been staggering." "172 million 'post-PC' devices were sold last year, 76% of Apple's revenue," reports Engadget. 10:05 There are 362 retail stores. 10:07 Engadget reposts: "iPhone, iPad, iPod touch are all based on iOS and we have now sold an astonishing 315 million devices through last year, 62 million in Q4 2011." 10:08 Siri is coming to Japan. 10:09 As we pointed out earlier, Apple is boasting about their 25 billion app downloads (which is very impressive). 10:10 gdgt is reporting that Stevens is talking about the iCloud: "In just a few months we’ve gotten to over 100 million customers on iCloud. Part of iCloud is iTunes in the cloud. Today we’re announcing that it now supports movies." 10:11 iTunes will support 1080p movies, which sounds like iPad 3 HD is coming... 10:12 New HD Apple TV. 10:13 Engadget reports: "Tim Stevens: 'You can also get your iTunes playlists from iCloud right on here too.'" There will also be 3rd party apps and photos. 10:15 CNET is reporting "Same $99 price tag Cook says. Coming next week, and you can pre-order it today." 10:16 Now the iPad. "15.4 million sold in the last quarter," reports Engadget. "That's more iPads than any PC manufacturer sold PCs. HP sold 15.1 million PCs total in that same quarter, though we're not sure of the source of these numbers." 10:18 Favorite device for browsing the web and checking email. 10:19 from gdgt: "Tim’s rattling off categories that the iPad is users’ favorite in: book reading, web browsing, gaming. 'For so many activities they responded: iPad. Part of the reason is the incredible bundled apps with iPad, and the over 200k apps that have been custom built to take advantage of the big, beautiful multitouch screen.'" 10:20 More than 200,000 custom apps have been built to incorporate iPad features. 10:21 The blogs around the web are reporting that Tim is comparing apps on other tablets, which he claims don't look as good as on the iPad. 10:22 The new iPad! It has a retina display. 10:24 From Engadget: "'This presents a problem for us in presenting it to you. For the first time an iPad has a higher resolution than this entire display behind you... That's a fun challenge.'" 10:25 From gdgt: "“When you turn on that new iPad you’re going to see graphics, text, icons sharper than you can imagine. Everything you do is going to look stunning." 2048 x 1536 pixels. 10:27 From the NY Times: "Mr. Schiller is saying that everything is going to look amazing. The new display is 2,048 by 1,536 pixels, or more than 3.1 million pixels -- a million more pixels than a 1080p high-definition TV. 10:28 To help this device run faster they created the "A5X chip" which includes quad-core graphics, which is 4x faster than the iPad. 10:29 It's got a rear camera for FaceTime. Lots of new features. From gdgt: "Auto-exposure, auto-focus, auto-face detection, great edge-to-edge detail, AF-lock, 'It is just a blast to use.'" 10:31 Wow, it records 1080p video! 10:32 It has voice dictation, a new keyboard and a microphone. The camera has image stabilization and the mic, noise reduction. 10:33 It supports English, French, German and Japanese. 10:34 Engadget reports that it has 4G LTE, which is much faster than the old iPads. Engadget reports: "iPad 2 has 3.1Mbps on EV-DO, 7.2 on HSPA," and then, "New iPad now has 21Mbps HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA at 42Mbps, with LTE taking the cake at 73Mbps." 10:37 The new iPad is available from Verizon and AT&T and both versions come 3G and "world ready". 10:39 It has 10 hours of battery life on 3G, 9 on 4G. It is 9.4mm thin and weighs 1.4lbs. It comes in black and white and is $499. 10:41 Preorders start today. It's available 3/16. It ships to the U.S., Canada, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Austria. 10:44 Engadget is reporting that Apple is demoing a new game: "'Today we're thrilled to show you our new flight sim game, Sky Gamblers.'" Extra graphics make these games possible. 10:46 SketchBook Pro from Autodesk is a new drawing app for the iPad. 10:48 gdgt reports: "In Autodesks’s 29 year history they had over 10 million desktop customers; on iOS they’ve reached tens of millions of users in just two years. “It’s absolutely amazing.” Introducing Sketchbook Ink — focuses on line art." CNET reports that this app will be available in April. 10:52 Zoom in features in game. 10:53 From gdgt: "'This new device has more memory and higher screen resolution than an Xbox 360 or PS3.'Hmm, interesting way of looking at it." 10:56 From Engadget: "Garage Band now has Smart Strings, a Note editor and you can push through iCloud too. There's new sharing, too." 10:59 Ok DIYers. iMovie works with the new camera and you can now use your iPad to shoot and edit book trailers! (High def, no less). 11:02 You can beam photos between iOS devices with new iPhoto app. 11:04 CNET reports on the new iPhoto: "New iPhoto has a very bouncy, different feel from its OS X counterpart. We're geting a view of the interface , which Ubillos shows can be moved around with your finger to set the way you want it." It works with photos up to 19 megapixels. 11:08 It has a built in exposure tool for setting the exposure and saturation. Third party apps can help with lightening and darkening. 11:11 There is a new journal feature in which you can write text and add photos, calendars, maps and even weather widgets. Cool for writers that want to illustrate their stories! 11:12 All of this can be published to iCloud via the $4.99 app. 11:14 Quoting CNET: "'Don't let anyone tell you that you can't create on an iPad,' Schiller says." No more excuses, it's now a creation machine. 11:20 iPad 2 is now $399. 11:21 Everyone wants to know what they will call it, but the screen shots on the stage are just calling it "the new iPad." I wonder what will happen when it becomes the "old iPad"? 11:24 The conference is coming to an end. But Apple will have more out this year. gdgt reports: "'Across the year you’re going to see a lot more of this kind of innovation, we are just getting started.'" 11:25 Finally, Apple's homepage is updated with the new device.
