Android Tablets Outsold iPads in 2013

Android tablets are gaining momentum in global sales – so much so they were able to overtake the formidable iPads. The findings comes from Gartner research firmA  127% jump in tablet sales in 2013 saw 61.9% of that market share going to Android devices last year, compared to that of that iPad, which was only at 36%, down from the previous year’s 52.8 percent despite a growth in sales from 61.4 million from 10.4 million. As a company, however, Apple sold over twice as many units of Samsung, its closest competitor.

“In 2013, tablets became a mainstream phenomenon, with a vast choice of Android-based tablets being within the budget of mainstream consumers while still offering adequate specifications,” said Roberta Cozza, research director at Gartner. “As the Android tablet market becomes highly commoditized, in 2014, it will be critical for vendors to focus on device experience and meaningful technology and ecosystem value — beyond just hardware and cost — to ensure brand loyalty and improved margins.”
