Android OS 2.3 (Gingerbread) Platform & SDK Tools Announced

It seems like Android users (me included) have been waiting for Gingerbread for months now. Gingerbread isn’t available to the masses yet. But, Google is providing developers a peek ahead and new tools.

– Enhancements for game development
– Rich multimedia: This includes support for the new VP8 and WebM video formats.
– Near Field Communications (NFC) support
– Front-facing camera support
– SIP/VoIP: Voice over IP support

Here’s what’s new for developers:
– Simplified debug builds
– Integrated ProGuard support: Code obfuscation to make code difficult to read and reverse-engineer
– HierarchyViewer improvements
– Preview of new UI Builder
