Amazon Instant Video Comes to the iPad

It’s only been a day since Amazon upgraded its Cloud Music Player, and it looks like Amazon is continuing to ratchet up the pressure on Apple.  Amazon has just released an instant video for the iPad. There’s no iPhone version just yet, but the app is likely to please iPad owners.

The app offers access to a catalog of over 120,000 videos, but those are the ones you can rent or buy. Streaming is still more limited, with only 18,000 video titles available for instant streaming, including a wide selection of current and recent TV shows and movies. You can subscribe to a Season Pass, which will have the app automatically download an episode from a TV show the morning after it’s broadcasted. What’s more, the app will also resume where you left off watching from Kindle Fire, PS3, PC, Mac, or the models of smart TVs and Blu-ray players that support Amazon Whispersync.

I haven’t had a chance to really use it yet, but the app does respond well as I navigate through the menus. I happen to have an Amazon Prime membership, and I’m looking forward to testing this app.

For some time now I’ve been thinking about canceling my Netflix subscription, but one thing that’s held me back is that I don’t like Amazon browser based video player. now that I can watch on the iPad I just might follow through and cancel Netflix.

The app is free in iTunes, but you’ll need either a Prime membership or purchased/rented videos before you can watch. As for me, I’ll be in my bunk.
