Aereo Expands Its Market Lineup

Barry Diller's streaming service also secures more financing

Barry Diller's oft-sued startup Aereo isn't just refusing to back down, it's expanding. The broadcast streaming service will hit some 22 new cities in 2013, including Austin and Houston, Texas, Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, Miami, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Detroit, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Providence, R.I., and Birmingham, Ala. All are major broadcast markets.

The company also revealed that it had secured another round of financing—$38 million from Diller's IAC and Highland Capital Partners, among other groups.

Aereo has successfully warded off any legal injunctions that would shut down its New York-based service; the company now appears to be challenging its detractors—the broadcast networks—to fight the same battle in nearly two dozen new venues.

"Consumers want and deserve choice," Aereo CEO Chet Kanojia told an audience at the Bellagio in Las Vegas this morning.
