5 Lessons Learned from Magazine Apps

At the MPA Digital: eReading conference today, a number of different magazine publishers shared app design tips. We’ve collected our favorite pieces of advice below.

1. Personalize your app for readers. Parenting magazine’s Ages and Stages app lets you customize your reading experience based on the age of their child–even uploading a photo so you can see your child every time you open the app.

2. Hire a movie director for your short app videos. Travel + Leisure hired director and actor Andrew McCarthy to create two-minute travel videos. He produced, directed, and narrated the videos.

3. Bar code scanning can help with mobile apps. The Consumer Reports app lets readers check prices and ratings while shopping in real life. Could also work for recipes and other shopping-related features in other magazine apps.

4.  Instead of delivering your whole magazine as app, focus on a single story. The Vogue app featured Lady Gaga-focused app edition last month, Rihanna-focused issue this month. They included extra photos, articles, and videos expanding a single feature from the magazine.

5. $9.99 is unacceptable magazine app price for most mobile and tablet readers. Consumer Reports had lots of negative feedback with that price point and found more success with $4.99. When you lower the price point, be sure to let your readers know about it.
