In 1970, Earth day was started by a senator from Wisconsin after witnessing a massive 1969 oil spill off the coast of California. Earth Day has become a global event with more than 500 million people in 175 countries taking time each April 22nd to celebrate our planet and keep it green. Today, the world is still struggling with natural disasters, human rights issues, massive oil spills and leaking nuclear power plants. It is a challenge and momentous moment to share the need to save our natural resources. With that said, here are 5 social media Earth Day web sites to help celebrate this important day of the year. Billion Acts of Green The Earth Day Network is promoting its Billion Acts of Green initiative as an effective way to give people a motive to take action to benefit the environment, and then be counted. The Network’s end goal is to send a message to world leaders for urgent, meaningful change for the planet. Anyone interested can participate online using the site’s widget that posts updates on both Twitter and Facebook. After your pledge, you can scroll down the home page and fine other ways to take action online or within your community. Earth Day Live Chat Sponsored by Wiki Peace, participants can join the rest of the world for a historic global live chat for our planet. The chat will begin Friday, April 22 at 7AM EDT and run for 24 hours. It will cover a range of topics, feature prominent expert panelists and hopefully organize global action towards peace and environmental preservation. You can even place the widget on you site to help promote Earth Day Live Chat. Save You Water Calculator Underwriter Laboratories sponsors a “Save Your Water” consumption calculator with metrics based on the U.S. EPA’s daily household water consumption figures. Participants can calculate their water consumption, and then make a pledge to reduce the household’s consumption of water. Once the pledge is made Underwriter Laboratories will donate one dollar for each of the first 15,000 pledges received. Water is one of the most important resources on our plant. On Earth Day make your pledge to conserve water within your household. NASA Earth Day Celebration Every day is Earth Day for NASA’s social media. The web site posts new images on a continuous stream from the agency’s fleet of 13 Earth-orbiting satellites and many research aircraft to the agency's web site as well as on Twitter and Facebook. NASA's collective eyes on Earth are pioneering scientists' ability to see our home planet around the clock in order to better understand how it works. Viewing these images, participants can see the beauty of our planet and the importance of preserving our natural resources. Picnic for the Planet Something that you can do with your kids is go to Picnic for the Planet and plan a picnic on Earth Day. Then, share your picnic with the web site, telling all the cool things that happened to make your picnic so special. The site even offers tips on what type of food to take on the picnic. “We’ll pick out some of our favorite picnics and photos and share them with the rest of the Picnic for the Planet community.” Every day is Earth Day, and we are reminded about taking care of our planet that we call home. Earth Day is the occasion to teach ourselves and our children about the environment and the importance of taking care of our home.
