4Q 2009 Was a Great Smartphone Quarter – How Will 2010 Look?

Here’s a great little (literally) book to read during the upcoming (U.S. only) 3-day weekend later this month: How to Lie with Statistics. And, here’s a topic where at least someone must be lying. Didn’t we just read a few weeks ago about how weak the smartphone market was in 2009? So, how does that jive with this item from IDC?

Worldwide Converged Mobile Device Market Grows 39.0% Year Over Year in Fourth Quarter, Says IDC

The top five “converged mobile devices vendors” for the 4th quarter of 2009 were Apple, HTC, Motorola, Nokia, and RIM. So, “converged” is IDC’s codeword for smartphone.

The full year to year (2008 to 2009) comparison looks positive too with a 15% increase (151.4 million units compared to 174.2 million units).

IDC predicts a new record shipment record in 2010. However, they don’t provide any predicts numbers or percentages to go along with the statement. If the economy doesn’t sputter and dive this year, I’m looking forward to seeing a lot more smartphones out there “in the wild”.
