Geraldo Rivera Issues a Fake Apology for His Ridiculous Hoodie Comments

Mustachioed jerk Geraldo Rivera issued a non-apology today for his comments about the Trayvon Martin tragedy, made last week on Fox & Friends. At the time, Rivera said that the hoodie the unarmed teen was wearing was just as responsible for his death as George Zimmerman, the man who shot him. In a letter to Politico, Rivera wrote, "by putting responsibility on what kids wear instead of how people react to them I have obscured the main point that someone shot and killed an unarmed teenager." But he also said, "I apologize to anyone offended by what one prominent black conservative called my ‘very practical and potentially life-saving campaign urging black and Hispanic parents not to let their children go around wearing hoodies,’" quoting a story from the National Review. According to Politico, Rivera has been "buried" under backlash since the appearance. Criticism even came from his son. Once again, this is an apology that falls under the category of "I'm sorry I said something that got me into a whole lot of trouble," despite Rivera's statements about how sincere he is. Russell Simmons is one of those not buying the apology. He's written a post on his blog Global Grind saying flat out: Geraldo, your apology is bullshit! Your apology is nothing but a defense of a racist, backward thing you already said. And I am a yogi, and I generally don't speak like this, but I have to say it like it is. It is a non-apology apology that continues to blame the victim for their appearance. Separately, Trayvon Martin's family is trying to protect him against what his parents (correctly) say is an attack on his reputation. "They killed my son and now they're trying to kill his reputation," his mother Sybrina Fulton told the media. The Daily Beast today published a story called, "Why Conservatives Are Smearing Trayvon Martin's Reputation." The family blames police for leaking information about Martin's high school suspension. Rallies have been taking place across the country, with participants seeking Zimmerman's prosecution. Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch leader who shot and killed Martin, has not been charged. Support has come from regular citizens, celebrity personalities, and politicians across the country. And, of course, the President has made a powerful statement about the issue.
