15% of Humans Now Have 3G Service, 40% by 2014

The estimated world population is about 6.8 billion people. Qualcomm estimates that just under 15% of us are 3G wireless data subscribers as of mid-March:

3G has reached 1 billion subscribers. What can we expect going forward?

They quote an estimate from Wireless Intelligence that the number of 3G subscribers will reach 2.8 billion by 2014. Assuming the world’s population grows linearly at a 1.14% growth rate between now and 2014, the world’s population should be around 7.1 billion. This works out to a bit under 40% of the world’s population in 2014.

This seems like an awfully large percentage of the world paying a monthly 3G data subscription given today’s economic state. But, stranger things have happened. Stay tuned until 2014 when we’ll revisit this prediction. I placed an alarm in Google calendar with this blog’s contents to remind me about the prediction 🙂
