It was only a century ago, in 1921, when the Football Association—British soccer’s governing body—banned women’s soccer, saying the sport was “quite unsuitable for females.”

One hundred years later, on a cold day in November 2021, 30 young women gathered in the Aston Villa arena in Birmingham, U.K., for a heated game of street soccer. “I’m a big game player,” the girls shouted in the promo video, like a scene from a high-octane Nike ad. Former England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand even sent a message of support to the players: “Bring back the trophy,” he urged them.
