New Hampshire’s “Live free or die” may be coolest state motto of them all. It’s much more bad-ass than, for example, “You’re going to love it here.” Officials in New Hampshire tried putting that wussy new phrase on highway-welcome signs recently, and the backlash has been swift. “Right now, every time I go past those things I’m embarrassed,” the state senate majority leader said last week. Gov. John Lynch feels the same way, even though he one championed the new signs.
