Now that Geico has done a spelling-bee commercial (not new, but I caught it last night for the first time), does this mean the country’s spelling-bee mania may finally be on the downswing? People went nuts for the movie Spellbound, released in 2002 under the tagline “Everyone wants the last word.” (Spellbound’s Web site is still up, and you can play a cool version of Hangman there.) Then there’s The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, the musical that opened at Second Stage in New York before transferring to Broadway last May.
