Infomercial king Ron Popeil, who turned kitchen gadgets into billion-dollar brands and paved the way for the modern direct-response business, died Wednesday in Los Angeles. He was 86.
Popeil, a natural showman who started hawking his father’s inventions at flea markets as a teen, was the driving force behind products like Mr. Microphone, the Pocket Fisherman, the Cap Snaffler, Hair in a Can and the Buttoneer.
One of his biggest hits was the Showtime Rotisserie, for which he coined the phrase “Set it and forget it.”
