A person on parole or probation is arrested every four minutes for violating the terms of their release, according to the Council of State Governments Justice Center. A new 90-second public service announcement by New York ad agency Droga5 and the criminal justice reform organization Reform Alliance spotlights just how mundane many of these violations are.
The “Technically Illegal*” spot opens with a warning that “everything you’re about to see is technically illegal.” Directed by Malik Hassan Sayeed and set to Jacob Banks’ song “Devil That I Know,” the video shows a man visiting his sick father, a mother picking up medicine for her baby, a woman out to dinner, a couple reuniting and a man desperately rushing to get to his parole meeting.
