Pissed SE Toyota dealers pull ads from ABC

Ah, recalls. They're never good for business. But is it a wise idea for to cancel your advertising when people report on them? Toyota dealers have started pulling ads from ABC, though right now it's only in local markets in five states. OK, basically it's just Southeast Toyota, whose ad agency, 22squared, informed ABC that the decision was due to ABC's "excessive stories on the Toyota issues." Southeast Toyota sells 20 percent of all Toyotas in the U.S., so it's not a tiny chunk. More important, the headline in The New York Times makes it sound like all Toyota dealers are in on this. ABC says it's not worried, and actually seems kinda proud. Maybe it's for the best. ABC gets to look like it's not in the pockets of big advertising, and Toyota gets to save a little face. After all, there's nothing funnier than a Toyota spot running right after a recall story.
