Pennsylvania picks its bumper sticker

We’re sure you’ve been on the edge of your seats waiting for the news of which slogan won the bumper-sticker competition held by the Pennsylvania Tourism Office. Here it is: “I break for Shoofly Pie.” As a colleague pointed out, “I BRAKE for Shoofly Pie” sounds more accurate under the circumstances in which someone would read this slogan—say, for instance, in a traffic jam on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Still, this slogan has it all over the other finalists, which included “Pennsylvania is for roadtrippers,” “Honk if you like roadtrips” and “Proud parent of a PA roadtrip.” There’s nothing distinctly Pennsylvanian about any of the other finalists, whereas shoofly pie, which is popular among the Pennsylvania Dutch, is as endemic to the state as scrapple, and much more worth braking breaking for.
