Patreon Launches the Pull Up Incubator for Creators of Color

Since its inception, Patreon has provided a space for independent creators to make additional income while connecting directly with their most fervent supporters. For many marginalized creators, the membership platform is a vital, if not wholly necessary, extension of their small business or portfolios. But any venture is only as effective as the resources at the creator's disposal and for creators of color, gaining access to those resources can be pose a serious challenge. It is my hope that the program serves as a conduit for creators of color to retain ownership of their work, inspire community and foster change to help generations coming up.Hewan Abebe, head of creator initiatives for Patreon's Creator Success team Patreon is aiming to level the playing field with Pull Up, a new incubator and creative community powered by the platform's Creator Success team to give creators of color access to capital and other resources for their burgeoning businesses. Along with opportunities to apply for additional funding, participation in the community also grants access to the Pull Up Salon Series, which exclusive events, panels, and workshops featuring industry-leading creators. "There are so many incredible creators of color making beautiful things on Patreon, and we are psyched to be helping this group build their businesses, invest in their communities and grow their dreams," said Patreon co-founder and CEO Jack Conte in a statement. A community with a purpose The brand has partnered with a number of high-profile creators to develop the community, including Issa Rae’s HOORAE Media, author Blair Imani, actress Amanda Seales' Smart Funny & Black, singers Durand Bernarr and Jade Novah, entrepreneur Nicole Cardoza, rapper and TV personality Tim Chantarungsu and artist Tina Yu. “We are excited to be a part of Pull Up, powered by Patreon’s Creator Success team, who continue to be a champion for HOORAE on and off the platform,” said Issa Rae in a statement. “We share a core set of values in empowering creators of color with access and resources, so I’m thrilled my team and I get to be on this journey with the other creators in the initiative.” To help introduce the program, Patreon will host Pull Up Late Night, a livestream event featuring Cardoza, D Smoke and RT TV.
