Maurice Gee's novel Going West literally springs off the page in this animated spot for the New Zealand Book Council by Colenso BBDO and Andersen M Studio. The clip's garnered a quarter-million-plus YouTube views in less than two weeks, and there's no denying it's visually impressive. Still, I found the monochrome images and droning voiceover a bit turgid at first. After the halfway point, the pace picks up, and the stark colors and distorted narration get hypnotically trippy.
