Upon his murder, Mexican journalist Javier Valdez Cardenas was not silenced. Instead, his work only gained new momentum and would protect others to continue his mission.

A winner of the International Press Freedom Award, Cardenas spent his career investigating and exposing drug cartels and their ties to elected officials in his country. His death was condemned by international organizations such as the European Union and the United Nations.

Such was the feeling for his work, a demonstration against his murder was staged in Mexico City.
