McDonald’s Defaced Impressionist Paintings to Elevate Itself to a Classic

The brand inserted its products into artwork by Manet and Renoir

What comes to mind when you think of a classic? The Mona Lisa. A Beatles song. The novels of Charles Dickens. 

McDonald’s likely doesn’t fall into that category for most people, but an ad campaign attempts to elevate the brand into the realm of the timeless. 

DDB Athens created a series of ads that inserts McDonald’s into classic Impressionist paintings. The works of artists Edouard Manet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir are reimagined to include key markers of the brand—and recognizable characters from paintings are seen interacting with fast-food products. 

For example, Manet’s “A Bar at the Folies-Bergère” depicts a scene at a nightclub in Paris, but in this new version the mysterious woman at the bar is not serving drinks but rather a McDonald’s paper bag and chicken nuggets.
