Looking for an Internship in Advertising? This Agency Will Give You a Job Instead

Internships are mostly about trading free labor for job experience. But Toronto agency Zulu Alpha Kilo is taking a different approach to internships this year—turning them into employeeships, where two soon-to-be or recent grads will get real jobs at the agency, with real salaries.

“We were inundated with an overwhelming amount of intern requests this year. We decided to create real jobs instead,” says Zak Mroueh, chief creative officer and founder of Zulu Alpha Kilo. “We figured a ‘$40K a Year Employeeship’ with a $5,000 signing bonus was one way to attract the best up-and-coming talent.”

This video explains more:

To apply, email employeeship@zulualphakilo.com with a link to your book and 50 words or less about your favorite piece of work in it and why you think it’s the best. Applications are being accepted through March 17.

Then applicants will be invited to take part in a “rigorous four-hour paid interview involving a gauntlet of creative tasks.” Two winners get a permanent job at $40,000 a year, along with a $5,000 signing bonus.

So, is this really a rethinking of internships, or just a clever recruitment campaign from an agency known for its self-promotion? Either way, good luck if you apply.
