It’s simple: Americans should buy less food so they can pay down their debt.

In polling conducted by International Communications Research for the Cambridge Consumer Credit Index, people were asked to say which of several virtuous actions they’d most like to accomplish this year. "Lose weight or exercise more" got the most mentions (30 percent), followed closely by "pay off or pay down your debt" (25 percent). There was less enthusiasm for "get a more secure or better job" (14 percent), "improve your personal relationships" (12 percent) and "stop smoking or drinking alcohol" (11 percent).
