In Kodansha’s century-plus of business, the publisher has introduced audiences to iconic titles like Attack on Titan, Akira, and Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, not to mention kickstarting the careers of legendary storytellers like Haruki Murakami.

But despite all its contributions to global pop culture, Kodansha isn’t exactly a household name.

Now, for the first time in its 112 years as a publishing house, Kodansha has launched a unified brand identity and logo. Teaming up with NYC-based agency Gretel, Kodansha created a branding it hopes will bring consistency to its many products.

“Arriving at that global purpose was an exercise in finding the connective tissue across different kinds of content: magazines, novels, manga and anime,” said Gretel’s executive strategy director Daniel Edmundson.
