The Summer Olympics—which begin in just two weeks—will have no spectators, organizers said Thursday, marking the latest blow to the 2020 Tokyo Games that have been repeatedly roiled by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
A complete ban on all Olympics spectators, which had been recommended by medical advisors as Covid-19 cases continue to climb in Japan, comes shortly after Japan Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga declared a fourth state of emergency in the country. The decision marks a reversal from organizers’ previous plans to limit attendance by 50% but still allow fans to attend in person.
