OWN and SeeHer Create Guide to Improve Representation of Black Women in Media

New #WriteHerRight guide encourages storytellers to apply an intersectional lens

The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) and the Association of National Advertisers’ know the importance of representation. Now the groups want to make sure that Black women are authentically reflected in media by the advertising and creative communities.

OWN teamed up with ANA’s SeeHer movement to create a #WriteHerRight Black Female Characters: Authentic Representation and Storytelling Guide in the first co-developed resource from the partnership.

“Now more than ever it is critical for content to authentically reflect the people it serves, especially women and in particular, Black women,” Sheereen Russell, group vp, ad sales/client partnerships/inclusive engagement, OWN, said in a statement.

The partnership is designed to encourage brands to apply an intersectional lens when it comes to representation, and help more Black women see the themselves authentically reflected in content.
