This Is Us, broadcast’s biggest scripted entertainment series in the adults 18-49 demo most coveted by advertisers, is preparing to take its final bow.

NBC’s hit family drama will end in the 2022-23 season, after Season 6, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The network, which declined comment to Adweek, is expected to announce the show’s conclusion on Friday, when it unveils next season’s broadcast lineup ahead of NBCUniversal’s upfront event on Monday.

The show went from being an abandoned film script to a breakout hit when it debuted in 2016. NBC helped grow its Season 2 audience by airing it after the Super Bowl in 2018, and even briefly planned to use the show to resurrect Must-See TV on Thursdays.

This Is Us has been a rare broadcast hit as audiences continue to leave linear for streaming. This season, it tied The Masked Singer as the No. 1 entertainment series in the 18-49 demo, with a 2.0 rating, and was tops among all scripted broadcast shows.

Still, the series had been widely expected to end after six seasons, following NBC’s three-year renewal of the series in 2019.

At the time, NBC said it hadn’t yet determined whether This Is Us’ three-season renewal would take the series to the end of its run. “That’s open for right now,” said then-NBC entertainment chief Paul Telegdy, adding that the network would defer to creator Dan Fogelman.

But Fogelman has been consistent in telling reporters, including Adweek, that he had crafted a beginning, middle and end to the drama that would take roughly six seasons to tell, even though NBC would like to keep the series going as long as possible.

Just last week, Fogelman seemed to once again confirm that This Is Us would end after Season 6, tweeting that the show’s Emmy-winning star Sterling K. Brown should be considered for a new Superman film, which will feature a Black actor in the role, given that Brown will be “available in a year or so.”
