Needless to say, the flood of ongoing programming focused on the King of Pop continues. Second in the overnights (and an expected first among adults 18-49) was NBC’s line-up of a repeat of America’s Got Talent (#2: 5.5/10), an original installment of America’s Got Talent (#1: 7.9/13 -- top-rated show of the evening) and a repeat of Law & Order: SVU (#2: 5.2/ 9). Finishing in the distant No. 3 spot was ABC, with a considerable 61 percent deficit behind second-place NBC. Week two of ABC summer entry The Superstars does not live up to its title, with a mere 2.6/ 5 in the overnights from 8-9:30 p.m. Take a look at the half-hour breakdown: The Superstars (ABC)8:00 p.m.: 2.8/ 5 (#3)8:30 p.m.: 2.8/ 5 (#3)9:00 p.m.: 2.3/ 4 (#3) Next on the alphabet net was an original installment of sitcom Better Off Ted (#4: 1.2/ 2 at 9:30 p.m.), followed by summer newsmagazine Primetime: Family Secrets at a last-place 2.8/ 5 at 10 p.m. Given the abysmal performance for Better Off Ted (which could be an historical low in the Tuesday 9:30 p.m. half-hour for ABC), the network should rethink its decision to bring it back in midseason. Forget the underserved critical accolades and just swing the axe, ABC. Elsewhere, Fox aired a repeat of Reese Witherspoon theatrical Legally Blonde (#4: 2.0/ 3 from 8-10 p.m.). And the CW closed the evening with its combination of a repeat of 90210 (#5: 0.6/ 1), which did not exactly set the water-cooler on fire in season one, and the season (or series) finale of inane CW reality/competition Hitched or Ditched (#5: 0.9/ 2). Source: Nielsen Media Research data (R = repeat) _____________________________________________________________________________ National Ratings in Prime-Time:Week of June 22, 2009 Three networks shared low-rated leadership on the sleepy week of June 22, with CBS first in households and total viewers; NBC No. 1 among adults 18-49 and adults 25-54; and Fox tops in the adult 18-34 demo. CBS had now been the most-watched network in four of the last five weeks. Coverage of the death of Michael Jackson flooded the airwaves at the tail-end of the week, with the passing of both Jackson and Farrah Fawcett accounting for five hours of Friday’s line-up (including an encore telecast of NBC documentary Farrah’s Story). Elsewhere, ABC finished third in four of the five surveyed categories (tied with CBS in adults 18-49 and fourth among adults 25-54), while MyNetworkTV outdelivered last-place The CW for the fifth consecutive week. Excluding gains for MyNetworkTV (which remains on the plus side without Friday Night Smackdown! in the year-ago mix), year-to-year losses was the common observation. The biggest loser: The CW, with erosion of as much as 50 percent among adults 18-49 and what could very well be its lowest rated week ever. There were two series premieres this week -- NBC’s The Philanthropist and ABC reality/competition The Superstars, which is based on the old Wide World of Sports franchise. Leading out of America’s Got Talent on Wednesday gave 10 p.m. occupant The Philanthropist a boost, with 7.12 million viewers (#16 overall) and a 1.9/ 6 among adults 18-49 (tied for #12). But a repeat of CBS’ competing CSI: NY had more viewers (7.43 million), and the retention out of America’s Got Talent was moderate at 68 percent in total viewers and 61 percent in the demo. The Superstars, meanwhile, kicked-off with a disappointing 4.27 million viewers (#48) and a 1.5/ 5 among adults 18-49 (#25t) in the Tuesday 8-9:30 p.m. block. In season-finale news, NBC’s monotonous I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! was nothing to boast about, with 4.33 million viewers (#45t) and a 1.5/ 5 in the demo (#25t) in the Wednesday 8 p.m. hour. Also original was the conclusion of ABC miniseries Impact at a soggy 4.39 million viewers (#42) and a 1.1/ 3 among adults 18-49 (#47t) in the Sunday 9-11 p.m. block. And the new season of summer newsmagazine Primetime: Family Secrets launched with 3.34 million viewers (#70) and a 1.1/ 3 among adults 18-49 (#47t) in the Tuesday 10 p.m. hour. Comparably, this is now the top-rated cable telecast of the year, and the No. 1 awards show on cable also for the year in total viewers and adults 18-49. In addition, there were also record performances on BET for the 106 & Park pre-show (3.1 million total), the BET Awards ’90 After Party Fashioned by My Black is Beautiful Post Show (5.2 million) and the sneak peek of new BET series Tiny and Toya (3.8 million). -USA Extends Winning Streak:USA finished the just competed second quarter 2009 as cable’s top-rated network in households (2.37 million), total viewers (3.17 million), adults 18-49 (1.37 million) and adults 25-54 (1.47 million), extending its winning streak to 12 consecutive quarters in total viewers and the two key demos.
