Day-and-Date Film Releases Are Biggest Driver of HBO Max Sign-Ups

WarnerMedia counts 44.2 million domestic HBO Max and HBO subscribers at end of quarter

WarnerMedia’s once controversial decision to release the entire 2021 film slate for Warner Bros. both in theaters and on HBO Max is increasingly looking better and better for the company.

The monster movie Godzilla vs. Kong, which was released both in theaters and on HBO Max on March 31, yielded the biggest domestic box-office returns in a year’s time—it has grossed $80 million in the U.S. and nearly $400 million worldwide—and it also was the most-viewed film or series on HBO Max since the service debuted a year ago, AT&T chief financial officer Pascal Desroches told investors Thursday morning.
