I immediately turn to my cellphone and look to make sure that nothing awful has happened while I’ve been asleep [laughs]. If I’m lucky and I don’t find anything on my phone, I might sleep a little longer. Where do you get your news? I’m on the CNN app on my phone a lot. My fans keep me very much in the loop on anything regarding me, which I tend to try to not look at too much because that can get a little cuckoo. So you don’t have a Google alert set for your name? No! When I first started Glee, and it was my first job ever, I did have a Google alert. That lasted probably four days. You don’t want to know everything that’s written about you on the Internet, and I learned that the hard way. What are your go-to social media platforms? I’m a big Instagrammer and tweeter. Basically, I just use them to post pictures of my cat and dog. Who are your favorite people to follow? For a long time, it was Rihanna. Her Instagram was just a gift. But honestly, I’m such a nerd—you know when people make accounts for their animals? I follow hundreds of people’s pets! There’s something about seeing animals in funny hats and bow ties that just brightens my whole day. What’s your favorite app? My favorite is the Starmap app where you hold your phone up and it will tell you what every star that’s in the night sky is. Colfer’s own book series What TV shows do you watch? I am obsessed with Orange Is the New Black and Veep and Nurse Jackie and Long Island Medium. I love Cosmos. And Downton Abbey. Love Downton Abbey. What’s on your reading list? I’m playing Noël Coward in a biopic, so I’ve got pretty much every book that’s been written by or about him. And I have tons of books from authors because usually when I’m out doing book tours, people will leave me copies of their books. Neil Gaiman signed a copy of his book The Ocean at the End of the Lane for me because he knew I was a huge fan. Right now, I’m reading Jennifer Saunders’ autobiography, Bonkers, which is fantastic. You’re also the author of your own children’s book series. What were your favorite books as a kid? I love fantasy and magic, so the Harry Potter books will always have a special place in my heart. I actually prefer children’s fantasy books because they’re easier to read. The author’s not trying to show off how many words he knows. How do you wind down at night? There are a couple websites that I go to before bed—one is Discovery News, which is basically nerd central, and the other is PawNation, which is just cute pictures of animals.
