Ava DuVernay Hopes Her Array Crew Database Is Obsolete in 10 Years

Initiative is designed to improve inclusion on Hollywood sets

Filmmaker and screenwriter Ava DuVernay became used to being the only Black person on set when she started working in Hollywood. But with a database she built and rolled out last month to help get underrepresented groups hired in the industry, she is hoping to make her experience a thing of the past.

In a conversation Friday with Black List founder Franklin Leonard as part of the virtual South By Southwest festival and conference, DuVernay, of Selma and When They See Us fame, said that her Array Crew hiring database, which tabulates information on women, people of color and other underrepresented groups looking to get work in Hollywood, will reach its most successful point when it is no longer necessary.
