16 TV Shows That Will Air Their Final Episodes in 2021

A number of much-loved, long-running shows signed off last year, including Modern Family, Arrow, Empire and Schitt’s Creek. And 2021 already has its share of high-profile series finales Here are 16 series that have already announced they will be taking their final bows this year—including one show that has been airing since 2007. Better Call Saul (AMC) One year ago, AMC said that the Breaking Bad prequel—which I recently named the best TV show of 2020—will conclude after its upcoming sixth season, which at the time was “slated to air in 2021.” But that was before Covid-19 shut down TV and film production for several months. AMC hasn’t yet set when Season 6 will begin production, so there’s a chance this could resurface a year from now as one of the TV shows that will air its final episodes in 2022. Black Lightning (The CW) The CW currently has seven DC Comics superhero series on its roster, but that number will be reduced by two in 2021. The network said in November that Black Lightning’s fourth season—premiering Feb. 8—will be its last. However, the show’s legacy might continue on: The CW is working on a potential Black Lightning spinoff, called Painkiller and starring Jordan Calloway, who plays the character on the series. Bosch (Amazon) Based on Michael Connelly’s best-selling books, the detective drama, starring Titus Welliver, has been one of Amazon’s most popular series. Last February, Amazon picked it up for a seventh and final season, which began production last fall. Claws (TNT) In October 2019, TNT said the drama would end after Season 4, which was supposed to air last year. But those plans were delayed after the pandemic paused filming last March; production resumed in the fall. Dead to Me (Netflix) The dark comedy, staring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, was renewed last July for a third and final season. Production is slated to begin later this month. Dear White People (Netflix) Netflix said in October 2019 that the comedy would wrap after Season 4, which began filming last fall. Goliath (Amazon) The legal drama, starring Billy Bob Thornton, was renewed for a fourth and final season in November 2019. After the pandemic shutdown, it began gearing up last fall for production to resume. Grace and Frankie (Netflix) In September 2019, Netflix picked the Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin comedy up for a final, seventh season, and noted that it will make history as the streaming service’s longest-running original series ever, with 94 episodes. The series hasn’t resumed production since it was shut down last March, but filming is scheduled to continue this month. Keeping Up With the Kardashians (E!) After debuting in 2007 and generating 12 different spinoffs, the reality series is ending after Season 20, which will air this year, E! said last September. After that, the Kardashian-Jenner family is moving to Hulu, after striking a deal with the streaming service to create “global content” that is expected to debut late this year. The Kominsky Method (Netflix) Last July, Netflix picked up the Michael Douglas comedy for a third and final season, which began production in November. However, it was announced in September that Season 3 will not include Alan Arkin, who opted not to return. Last Man Standing (Fox) The Tim Allen sitcom has already risen from the dead once: ABC canceled the show in 2017, but a year later it was revived in Fox, where it ran for three more seasons. But Fox said in October that the show’s run will end after Season 9, which debuted on Jan. 3 Lucifer (Netflix) The drama, which had jumped to Netflix after three seasons on Fox, was picked up last June for a sixth and final season—even though the streaming service had previously announced a “final” fifth season. Shameless (Showtime) One year ago, Showtime renewed the drama for an 11th and final season, which initially was going to air last summer. After Covid-19 delays, Season 11 premiered last month, and will finish its run this year. Supergirl (The CW) Black Lightning isn’t the network’s only DC Comics superhero show ending in 2021. The CW said in September that the series will end after Season 6. While most of the network’s shows are starting their new seasons in January and February, Supergirl won’t air until later in the year, to accommodate star Melissa Benoist’s maternity leave. Superstore (NBC) NBC said last month that the office comedy will wrap after six seasons and 113 episodes. It returns from its winter hiatus on Jan. 14, for its final 11 episodes. Van Helsing (Syfy) Syfy renewed the series for a fifth and final season in December 2019. Production wrapped last September, but Syfy hasn’t yet said when the farewell season will air.
