10 Popular Shows That Didn’t Air New Episodes This Year (and When They Will)

The days, they pass. And with binge-watching and Peak TV, it’s hard to remember exactly when your favorite shows last released new episodes. If you're wondering why some of your favorite TV shows didn't turn up on any top 10 lists this year, it might be because they didn't actually air any new episodes in 2018. Here are some shows you might be surprised to hear didn’t release a single new episode this year, despite still remaining part of the pop culture conversation. Game of Thrones (HBO) The bloody and brutal race to gain the Iron Throne will return in April with its last six episodes. Of course, there has already been plenty of speculation about what will happen in the eighth, final season—even the show’s stars were reportedly kept in the dark about the real ending. Stranger Things (Netflix) Season 2 dropped in October 2017, and Netflix has been teasing Season 3 since it created a fake mall spot in July. However, those new episodes likely won't air until next summer. Veep (HBO) The HBO comedy, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, hasn’t posted a new episode since the summer of 2017. But fans shouldn’t fret: The final, seventh season—which just finished production last week—is expected to be released next spring. Mr. Robot (USA) The hacker drama, starring Rami Malek, didn’t air a new episode this year, as creator Sam Esmail was focused on directing every episode of Amazon's Homecoming. But the show's fourth and final season is expected to return in 2019. Rick & Morty (Adult Swim) The series inked a deal with Adult Swim for 70 new episodes over the summer, though fans haven’t seen a new episode released yet this year. Still, fans expect the fourth season of the show to drop sometime soon—perhaps during Christmas. The Crown (Netflix) The Netflix show, highlighting the life of Queen Elizabeth II, hasn’t released a new episode since December of last year. The third season of the show, which will jump ahead to later in the 1960s, is expected to drop in early 2019. You’re the Worst (FXX) This FX comedy (now on sister channel FXX) last aired in fall of 2017. Its fifth and final season will debut on Jan. 9. Master of None (Netflix) The comedy/drama, starring Aziz Ansari, didn’t air a single new episode this year. Ansari is going on a comedy tour in 2019, but it doesn’t seem like there are any firm plans for Season 3 yet. Better Things (FX) The comedy-drama series on FX aired its last episode in November 2017. It took a longer-than-usual hiatus after Season 2—in part so Pamela Adlon could determine how to proceed without co-creator and writing partner Louie C.K., whom FX cut ties with in November 2017 after he admitted to sexually harassing multiple women—but will be back in 2019 for a third season. Transparent (Amazon) This comedy-drama got extra attention this year after Amazon Studios launched an investigation into sexual harassment claims against Jeffrey Tambor. In February, the streaming service said the actor wouldn’t return to the series, which last aired new episodes in September 2017. Reportedly, the fifth and final season will end with a two-hour musical expected to be released next fall. Broad City (Comedy Central) Four and three and two and one … you didn’t see a new episode this year. Don’t get too down, though—the cast has been filming the fifth and final season of the Comedy Central show, which returns for its last run on Jan. 24.
