Shopify and JD Open a Gateway to China With Huge Potential—but No Guarantees

It lowers risk and investment for small businesses, though they could still run afoul of local consumers

Ecommerce platforms Shopify and JD.com have established a cross-border commerce partnership that gives U.S. sellers easier access to 550 million Chinese customers.

And while the deal also helps them better compete with global ecommerce rivals Amazon and Alibaba in a market reportedly worth five times that of the U.S., analysts warn Shopify brands aren’t necessarily guaranteed success in the hypercompetitive market and must therefore do their due diligence prior to entry.
