Rent the Runway Garments Seek Forever Homes at Saks Off 5th

A new partnership gives the retailer a foothold in pre-owned apparel

Discount designer retailer Saks Off 5th rebranded in March to better appeal to younger shoppers, and continued the revamp with a rewards program in May. Now, the transformation continues through a partnership with fashion rental service Rent the Runway.

A new pre-owned section on the retailer’s website showcases a curated collection of women’s clothing that has been worn by Rent the Runway customers but remains in what Saks Off 5th described as “excellent condition.”

Unlike Rent the Runway, through which customers wear garments and return them, the selection at Saks Off 5th offers a more traditional retail experience with one-time purchases. Per the website, discounts range from about 70% to 80% off the original price from more than 60 brands.

Like the rebrand, the partnership was based on customer research. A survey of Saks Off 5th customers found 70% had previously bought pre-owned clothing, shoes or accessories. What’s more, 80% of those customers said they’d like to be able to make those purchases directly through Saks Off 5th.

“We continue to look for innovative ways to expand our offering,” Saks Off 5th president and CEO Paige Thomas said in a statement. “Through this unique relationship with Rent the Runway, we’re introducing new brands, providing exceptional deals and offering pre-owned apparel from a trusted partner that resonates with our customers.”

Meanwhile, the resale market continues to grow in popularity. Brands like Madewell, Levi’s and Lululemon have also embraced the secondhand market recently.

“Whether renting or shopping resale, the secondhand economy is a critical part of creating a more sustainable future for our industry,” added Rent the Runway CEO Jennifer Hyman in a statement. “Saks Off 5th is known for offering incredible designer goods at great prices, which is a fantastic launch pad to educate more consumers and help to extend the life of these garments.”
