How NBA Top Shot Became a Gateway to NFT Adoption

Creator Dapper Labs on how community was key to the platform's success

Talk to any NFT enthusiast about how they first formed an interest in the technology, and there’s a good chance they’ll mention the National Basketball Association’s Top Shot digital collectible platform.

The Dapper Labs-created hub, which allows fans to purchase videos of game moments and other virtual memorabilia, quickly became a sensation after it launched in late 2020, helping to lay the foundation for the NFT craze to come.

At Coindesk’s recent Consensus conference in Austin, the company behind the popular platform and other executives in the sports NFT space discussed how the league managed to create such a popular gateway into the crypto art world and what’s next for the sports NFT space.

Dapper Labs vice president Ridhima Kahn said the key to Top Shot’s success was the ability to build a sense of community and accessibility around the digital wares offered on the marketplace.
