Hornbach Wants You to Kick Off Your Spring Projects With Some Glorious Destruction

The DIY home improvement retailer reflects Europeans' restlessness

Most home improvement advertisers follow a pretty standard guidebook: Show homeowners happily hammering some two-by-fours into a frame, then cut to them standing back and looking on with pride at the finished product.

Germany-based Hornbach, however, has long played by its own rules. Its annual campaigns from creative agency Heimat are often soaringly surreal and outright odd, capturing the spirit behind tackling big home projects rather than just showing them in-progress.

This year’s spring ad from the retailer is more muted than the colorful campaigns of years past, a fact intended to represent the emotional state many find themselves in today.

Set in a muted brown color palette under bleak gray clouds, the campaign’s anthem spot, “Make Room for Yourself,” aims to capture the mood of Europeans as they emerge from more than a year of pandemic-fueled isolation and begin to tackle ambitious projects.
