More Than One-Third of Americans Have Missed BNPL Payments

New report comes as U.S. regulators probe the nascent financing industry

As many Americans’ delayed payments for holiday gifts come due, a new report from insurance tech startup Breeze finds more than one-third of U.S. shoppers who used buy now, pay later (BNPL) services have missed a fee deadline at some point.

The survey of 1,500 American consumers in January revealed about three-quarters of shoppers say they have used BNPL services like Klarna, Affirm and Afterpay in the past. Around 57% of those users report the promise of delayed payments has caused them to overspend on purchases—sometimes through multiple accounts—and 36% have missed or made a late payment at least once before.
