Y&R Names Hayes N.A. CMO

Young & Rubicam has filled its CMO role in North America by hiring Chris Hayes, the European marketing director of Euro RSCG 4D.
Hayes succeeds Mitch Caplan, who held the role for three years. In June, Caplan accepted an offer to become North American CMO at Interpublic Group’s McCann Erickson. He starts his new job next month.
Hayes, who joins Y&R in November, will be based in New York and report to Tom Sebok, president and CEO of North America. As CMO, he’ll prospect potential clients, manage new business pitches, hone the agency’s positioning in the marketplace and contribute to public relations efforts, according to Sebok.
Hayes, 39, spent the past two years at Euro RSCG 4D’s office in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where he also was a global brand director, on Unilever. On his watch, the digital agency added assignments from Adidas, Danone and
In September 2009, Hayes also became director of a new social media group at the Havas shop. In addition, he has taught marketing at New York University since 1998, including a fall 2009 course on social media with Marian Salzman, North American president of Euro RSCG Worldwide PR.
Before Euro RSCG 4D, Hayes launched Barc, a line of skin-care products for urban males. Hayes was founder and CEO of Barc from 2005-08 and retains a minority stake in the business. Earlier in his career, he also worked within the Euro RSCG network as gm of PR unit Middleburg Euro RSCG and svp of marketing services at Euro RSCG 4D in New York.
In making the hire, Sebok cited Hayes’ “rich and varied experience” and business savvy. “He approaches things with great energy and entrepreneurial spirit, and that I found very, very attractive,” Sebok said.
During a two-month interview process, Sebok also found Hayes to be forward-looking and engaged in creativity. Hayes also met with worldwide CEO Hamish McLennan, global CCO Tony Granger, global chief insights officer John Gerzema and the leaders of the New York office — president Jane Barratt and co-executive creative directors Scott Vitrone and Ian Reichenthal.
“I was impressed by what they’re doing at Y&R,” Hayes said. “They have some good clients and they’re very committed to digital, which is what I really like about them.”
