LOS ANGELES In a surprise move, McCann-Erickson has been selected the winner of the California Lottery’s five-year, $125 million creative and media account, pending approval of the lottery commission, the lottery said.

The Los Angeles shop was one of four finalists asked to submit new cost proposals for the media portion of the account. The others included DDB and the incumbent, Grey, both in Los Angeles, and San Francisco shop Foote, Cone & Belding. However, both Grey and DDB opted not to submit new bids, with agency officials stating that the new scoring methodology made it impossible for any agency but FCB to win the account [Adweek, March 5].
