Yanks Win Big at London Awards

NEW YORK American agencies took home all but one grand prize at the London International Advertising Festival, held yesterday and today in London.

Volkswagen of America took the TV grand prize with Arnold’s “Bubble Boy,” “Squares” and “Chain Reaction” spots for the Beetle. “Bubble Boy” shows an office drone longing for the new Beetle convertible. “Squares” compares the round Beetle to mundane square objects like a sponge or an electric socket. “Chain Reaction” presents a succession of people smiling at each other, originating from a woman spotting a Beetle.

Arnold of Boston also won the grand prize in radio, along with Crispin Porter + Bogusky in Miami, for the “Positive” spot on behalf of the American Legacy Foundation campaign the agencies jointly share.

CP+B took home the outdoor grand prize for its BMW Mini Cooper outdoor installations, which included oversize trashcans, newspaper bins and phones placed in locations such as airports.

For interactive media, R/GA in New York won the grand prize for its Nikelab.com Web site. Harrisonhuman Bates in Johannesburg, South Africa, won the grand prize in the banner and interactive category for “People Opposing Women Abuse.”

There was no grand prize awarded for print advertising.

More than 70 countries submitted over 13,000 entries across all categories. Ted Sann, vice chairman of BBDO North America, served as advertising jury chair.
